Nintendo Switch 2 Review: Should You Buy the Next-Gen Hybrid Console?

Globally available in stores from June 5, 2024 is Nintendo’s Switch 2, which has been designed to revolutionize on-the-go gaming through improved and unique features in its hardware. The ultimate question that we wanted to answer by testing it for two weeks is: does it justify the price?

Hardware: Power Meets Portability

The Switch 2 makes no compromises. Combining the Arm processor and NVIDIA Tegra 239 chip works to produce better results than what was available in the first switch. A display resolution of 1080p/120 Hz full colors without blur on games like Super Mario World is now possible with the handheld mode. Once you dock it, the titles will also upscale very well up to 4K HDR, which is now at par with most modern TVs.

With its 256GB internal storage (8x original), there will be less need for quick microSD card purchases while performance remains constant even during long playing periods due to the cooling fan in the redesigned dock.

Joy-Cons 2. 0: Smarter Controls

Nintendo fixed what was not broken in the first place. The new magnetic Joy-Cons are easily attachable/detachable without any loose connection issues experienced in previous versions. One of the two controllers also has a chat button that directly connects your call without depending on the nonintuitive mobile app. But that’s not all. Can you navigate meus using optical sensors when two Joy-Cons are lying flat on the table? Well, it may not be good for shooters, although it has potential in puzzles or strategy games.

Game Library: Old + New

It supports backward compatibility with original Switch cartridges (verified with Tears of the Kingdom) that work smoothly except for few indie games which may require an update. This is where they raise the curtain with a big reveal – the new Super Mario World. It creates an amazing experience as players get engaged in open world games where they have to adapt with changing environment around them just like they are playing one of those future generation Ninety systems. Another win for the party – “Share Play” allows up to four local players join using one copy, also on older Switch models.

Who Should Buy It?

– First-Time Buyers: Worth the $399. You’ll be good for at least half a decade.

– Casual Gamers: Stick with your current Switch.

– Just be patient and buy it when there’s an offer during holiday.

The Nintendo switch 2 is not a game changer; is just an improved version of the original one. Although the increased cost may seem unfair, the improved hardware and better design make it a justifiable investment for hardcore gamers. The device is expected to cost above ¥3, 500 for the first adopters particularly in China and then it will be available in the market for a reasonable price.
