Dog Raincoat Back Length Measurement: The Step-by-Step Method That Saves You From Returns
Back length is the measurement that most people skip. They grab the chest girth, maybe check the neck, and then guess the back length based on weight. That is a mistake. Back length determines how much of your dog’s torso the raincoat actually covers. Get it wrong and the coat either rides up every time your dog bends down, or it drags on the ground like a dirty mop.
Measuring back length is not complicated, but there are a few details that can throw off your number if you do not do them right. This guide walks you through the exact method, step by step, so you get an accurate number every single time.
Where the Tape Actually Goes
Start at the base of the neck, right between the shoulder blades. That spot is called the withers, and it is the highest point of your dog’s back. From there, run the measuring tape straight down the spine to the point where the tail meets the body.
Stop right there. Do not follow the tail to the tip. The tail is not part of the torso, and including it in your measurement will give you a number that is way too long. You want the distance from the withers to the base of the tail — nothing more, nothing less.
Your dog needs to be standing on all four legs, squarely, with their back straight. If your dog is sitting or lying down, their spine curves and you will get a shorter number than reality. Always measure standing.
Why Back Length Matters More Than You Think
A lot of people focus on chest girth and forget about back length entirely. But here is the thing — the chest girth tells you whether the raincoat will close. The back length tells you whether it will actually protect your dog.
If the back length is too short, the raincoat ends right at the ribcage. That means the entire belly is exposed. Every time your dog steps into a puddle, water splashes up onto their stomach. Every time they run through wet grass, mud hits the underside. A short raincoat is basically a chest panel with no real protection, which kind of defeats the purpose.
If the back length is too long, the coat hangs down past the tail base and drags on the ground. Your dog steps on the fabric, stumbles, and rips it off within minutes. Long raincoats also get dirty fast and are a pain to clean.
The sweet spot is a coat that extends just past the belly button, covering the entire underside while still leaving room for the tail and legs to move freely.
How to Get an Accurate Number Every Time
Use a Soft Tape, Not a Stiff One
A hard metal tape measure does not follow the curve of your dog’s spine. It sits on top of the fur and gives you a number that is slightly off. Use a soft fabric tape measure instead. If you do not have one, wrap a piece of string from the withers to the tail base, mark where it ends, then lay the string flat and measure it with a ruler. Same result, no fancy tools needed.
Keep the Tape Straight Along the Spine
The tape should run in a straight line down the center of the back, following the spine. Do not let it drift to one side. If the tape angles off to the left or right, you are measuring a longer distance than the actual back length, and your number will be too big.
Have Someone Help If Your Dog Will Not Stand Still
If your dog is wiggly, have one person hold them gently by the collar while you take the measurement. Or use a treat at nose level to keep their head up and their back straight. A relaxed dog stands taller. A tense dog hunches up, and that shortens the back length by a centimeter or two.
Breeds That Make Back Length Tricky
Long-Backed Dogs
Dachshunds, Corgis, Basset Hounds, and Greyhounds have back lengths that are way longer than you would expect based on their weight. A 10-kilogram Corgi has a back length of about 35 centimeters, while a 10-kilogram Beagle is closer to 28 centimeters. Same weight, completely different numbers. Do not guess. Measure.
Short-Backed Dogs
Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers have compressed spines. Their back length is short, but their chest girth is wide. This combination makes sizing tricky because the raincoat needs to be short enough to fit the back but wide enough to go around the barrel chest. Always measure both numbers independently.
Curly-Tailed Dogs
Pugs, Shiba Inus, Akitas, and some Spitz breeds have tails that curl tightly over their backs. When you measure to the base of the tail, the tail itself might be sitting right on top of that spot. Make sure you are measuring to the actual point where the tail connects to the body, not to where the fur from the tail starts. If the tail is curled over, gently move it to the side before you place the tape.
What to Do With Your Back Length Number
Once you have your back length measurement in centimeters, compare it to the size chart provided by the raincoat maker. Every brand cuts their patterns differently, so a 30-centimeter back length on one brand might be a small, while the same number on another brand is a medium.
Always match your back length to the chart first, then double-check that your chest girth and neck girth also fall within the same size range. If the back length says medium but the chest says large, you need a large. All three measurements should agree on the same size.
If your dog falls right on the edge of a size range for back length, go up. A raincoat that is one size too long with adjustable cinches at the chest and waist will still keep your dog dry. A raincoat that is even one centimeter too short will not cover the belly, and your dog will get wet from the bottom up no matter how good the rest of the coat is.
Write the number down. Re-measure every few months. Puppies grow fast, adult dogs gain weight around the midsection, and senior dogs lose muscle mass.
