How to Measure Your Dog’s Neck Circumference for a Raincoat: The Easy Method That Actually Works
Getting the neck measurement right is the difference between a raincoat that slides on in five seconds and one that takes twenty minutes of wrestling while your dog stares at you like you have lost your mind. The neck girth is the gatekeeper measurement. If it is wrong, nothing else matters. The coat will not go over the head, or it will sit so tight around the neck that your dog panics the moment you put it on.
Most people either skip this measurement entirely or they guess based on collar size. Both approaches fail. Collar sizes vary wildly between brands, and your dog’s neck under a collar is not the same as your dog’s neck without one. You need the real number, taken the right way, with the right tools.
Where Exactly to Place the Tape
The neck girth goes around the base of your dog’s neck, right where a collar would normally sit. For most dogs, that is just behind the ears, at the thickest part of the neck. Not at the head. Not at the shoulders. The base of the neck.
Have your dog standing on all four legs, squarely, with their head up and their back straight. If your dog is looking down or stretching their neck forward, the measurement will be off. You want a natural, relaxed posture.
Wrap the measuring tape around that spot — behind the ears, at the thickest part — and make sure it sits level all the way around. Not tilted up toward the head. Not slanted down toward the shoulders. Straight and horizontal, like a ring around the neck.
How Snug Should the Tape Be
This part matters more than people think. The tape should be snug but not tight. You want to measure the neck, not squeeze it.
Slide two fingers between the tape and your dog’s skin. If you can fit two fingers comfortably, the tension is perfect. If you can only fit one finger, pull the tape out a little. If you can fit three or four, tighten it up.
The reason this matters is simple. A raincoat needs to fit over the neck, especially if it has a hood. If you measure too tight, the coat will not go on at all. If you measure too loose, water will pour in from the top every time it rains, and the whole point of having a hood disappears.
For dogs with thick fur around the neck — Shar Peis, Bulldogs, Pugs, Saint Bernards — do not press the tape flat against the fur. Let it sit naturally on top of the fur the way the raincoat will. The fur adds bulk, and you need to account for that. If the tape is buried in the fur, your number will be too small and the coat will not fit.
Why Collar Size Is Not the Same as Neck Girth
A lot of people just look at their dog’s collar and use that number. That is a shortcut that almost always leads to the wrong size.
Collars are designed to fit snugly. Raincoats are not. A collar sits tight against the skin to prevent slipping. A raincoat needs room to slide over the head and sit comfortably around the neck without compressing the trachea. The same dog might wear a 35-centimeter collar but need a 38-centimeter neck opening in a raincoat.
Also, different collar brands use different sizing standards. A medium collar from one brand might be 33 centimeters, while a medium from another brand is 40 centimeters. If you base your raincoat size on collar size, you are guessing with a guess.

Breeds That Make Neck Measurement Tricky
Dogs With Extra Skin Folds
Bulldogs, Shar Peis, Pugs, and Mastiffs have loose, wrinkly skin around the neck. When you wrap the tape around, the skin bunches up and gives you a number that is bigger than the actual neck circumference. To get an accurate measurement, smooth the skin out gently with one hand while you measure with the other. You want the tape to sit flat against the neck, not draped over folds of skin.
Dogs With Thick Manes
Great Pyrenees, Samoyeds, Chow Chows, and Huskies have dense fur around the neck that makes it hard to find the actual skin. In these cases, do not press the tape into the fur. Let it rest on top naturally. Then add about one to two centimeters to your final number to account for the fur bulk under the raincoat. That extra room ensures the coat slides on without getting stuck.
Dogs With Narrow Heads
Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, and Borzois have long, narrow heads and thin necks. Their neck girth is small compared to their chest, which can make sizing confusing. A raincoat that fits the chest might be way too loose around the neck. Always measure the neck independently and do not assume it matches the chest measurement.
What to Do With the Number Once You Have It
Take your neck girth measurement and compare it to the size chart provided by the raincoat maker. Every brand cuts their neck opening differently. Some brands make the neck hole generous. Others cut it tight. A 30-centimeter neck on one brand might fit a medium, while the same number on another brand needs a large.
Here is the rule that saves most people: if your neck measurement sits right on the edge of a size range, go up. A raincoat with a slightly loose neck and an adjustable cinch or velcro strap will still keep your dog completely dry. A raincoat with a neck opening that is even one centimeter too small will not go on at all, or it will go on and make your dog gag.
Write the number down. Keep it in your phone next to the chest girth and back length. Re-measure every few months. Puppies grow fast, adult dogs gain or lose weight around the neck, and senior dogs lose muscle mass which can change the neck circumference over time. A number from six months ago might not be accurate today. Updating it takes ten seconds and prevents a lot of wasted money and a very frustrated dog.
